Eric Louie is a Vancouver based painter born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA 1977. He holds a B.F.A. from the Alberta College of Art & Design completed in 2002. Louie has shown his work nationally & internationally in 40 exhibitions over the last two decades. How did you get into art?
I started painting full time after art school and haven’t looked back. I’ve gone through many styles over the years searching and learning. It’s great to try and push oneself and keep evolving the work and ideas.
How would you describe your style? What makes your art special?
I would say my style is abstract and composed of a mixture of painterly and architectural or metallic looking forms. I think they get unique when they start to take on their own presence beyond the limitations of the aesthetic. Making something inanimate come alive is always a dream. I feel that happens with the successful ones. How do you go about developing your work?
My work starts out on the iPad in procreate with a sketch. I’ll begin a version in oil on canvas and allow the painting to develop towards the drawing plan then allow for improvisations. The work usually ends up somewhere completely different as I go through the process. Sometimes I like surprises despite having an initial concept.Who or what influences you?
I feel I’m influenced by ideas associated with futurism and digital realms and societal betterment. Thinking or creating perspectives in some idealized technological world and speaking towards those concepts of how we all fit in. Moreover, how technology influences us and how we see things as humans.
What are you planning to do next?
I just finished a solo exhibition in Vancouver, BC with Bau-Xi Gallery. I was able to include some sculptural pieces in the show and hope to develop more in the next year. I’d like to try and use them as a stepping off point to try some collaborations with other artists. More to come!Instagram
