Graffiti and abstract forms inspire the graphic designer. Marc lives and works in a small suburb of Stuttgart/Germany. He studied Communication Design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and always has his sketchbook with him.
How did you get into art?
I always liked to draw as a kid. When I was 12 years old I discovered Graffiti which gave me a particular reason to draw. After a few years of doing that I got bored of letters and replaced them with abstract shapes.
How would you describe your style? What makes your work special?
My style evolved out of my graffiti practice so I look at it as some kind of abstract graffiti. The aim of every composition is to create harmony in form and colour. I enjoy exploring the world of abstract shapes because there’s no particular interpretation to each drawing. It’s the viewers decision to define what they want to see in my work. Working in 2D allows me to play with the parameters of the objects that I’m drawing.Such as adding imaginary shadows or optical illusions.
How do you go about developing your work?
My work always starts in my sketchbook. The drawing process is very spontaneous and intuitive. I’m reacting to the previously drawn without doing a pencil sketch beforehand. This process makes it interesting for myself because I don’t know how the drawing will look like in the end. I’m drawing form the outside to the inside. It starts with a rectangle and a shape and then I’m filling it with details to work out the final composition.
Who or what influences you?
My drawings are subconsciously inspired by everyday observations. Things that surround me in my apartment, architectural objects, product designs from past decades and of course the work of other artists.
Make us curious. What is planned next?
I’m always curious to evolve my style and bring in some new topics. For example at the moment I like to draw electronic devices like radios and mix them with abstract geometric shapes.
