Nora Boeke (1988, Amsterdam) is a contemporary abstract painter and is known for her bold use of color and movement that echoes through her paintings. She is a self-taught artist who has been painting since she could walk. How did you get into art?
I've been drawing and painting since I was young. It was about five years ago that I decided to share my work with the world. Just through instagram. Shortly after that my career kicked off.
How would you describe your style? What makes your work special?
Colourful and expressive.
I paint what I feel like and usually don’t start with a preconceived concept in mind. It's always an exploration how the painting evolves.Sometimes I get stuck, tangled up in thoughts.. then I move, dance or do something to surprise myself to feel again what way to go. What fascinates me is how often the final piece feels oddly familiar, as if I have seen it before.
Which raises the question: Do I merely see a colorful reflection of my emotional journey or was this picture something that I unconsciously worked towards to?How do you go about developing your work?
By experimenting. Just creating, doing things differently, try to make some bad stuff and then find the beauty in it.Who or what influences you?
Everything around me. It can be a beautiful color combination in garbage on the street, flowers, or even the amazing texture of mold on a mandarin I encountered yesterday.
And artists like David Hockney, Helen Frankenthaler, Paul Cezanne, Willem de Kooning, Frida Kahlo. I'm mostly attracted to color, I would say. This weekend I was in Paris and I became a fan of Renoir! I let out a little squeal when I turned around to the painting and saw it for the first time. And that from a small still life, two peaches on a plate, haha. It's those color combinations, so delectable!
Make us curious. What are you planning to do next?
Right now, I'm diving into larger canvases. And I'm super excited about exploring mural art. Would love to create murals that really elevate the space and fit perfectly with the design of the interior. Learn more about the artist:
