Peter Vahlefeld
"My paintings reflecting the ways in which we perceive an oversaturated mass media reality."
Peter Vahlefeld’s work has always been about the intricacies of transformation. He uses printed matter as key components of his canvases and juxtaposes them with savage scenarios constructed by oil paint. The work conveys a certain tension between the plasticity of paint and the flatness of prints, held together by shiny, glossy or matte mediums. Keyed-up color and almost gridlike compositions point to the readability, immediacy, and graphic presence of our popular culture. By concentrating more on process rather than subject matter, the act of painting becomes Vahlefeld’s primary focus.
