Julia Kunz (born 1985) is an abstract painter who now lives in Dachau and works in Munich. After studying art history at the University of Regensburg and working as a freelance exhibition assistant, she has devoted herself intensively to painting and creative design. In her art, she explores the interplay of shapes and colours, focusing on free compositions and intuitive guidance through the world of colour and shape contrasts. In addition to her work as a painter, Julia Kunz is passionate about interior design and the creation of atmospheric spaces.

How did you get into art?

I am a creative person and art has always been an important part of my life. I trained as an artist and studied art history. This allowed me to further deepen my passion for art and the different forms of expression. For me, art is not only an expression, but also a window to the world and to ourselves.

How would you describe your style? What makes your work special?

My style is experimental and expressive. Colour plays a central role - I love working with colours! I make my choices intuitively and allow myself to be guided by what is currently emerging. Painting without fixed guidelines gives me the opportunity to express myself fully and bring my ideas to life on canvas. I primarily work with acrylic because it allows me to build up layers and experiment with different techniques.

How do you go about developing your work?

I often have an idea in my head and I already have an idea of how I want to realise it on the canvas. I start by priming the canvas and usually have a colour concept in my head that I follow intuitively. When I create a work of art for someone, I think a lot about the person - their appearance or their character - if I know them better - inspire me, and I translate that into a completely unique world of colour. I dissolve the person for myself in a certain colour spectrum. I am particularly fascinated by the effect of colour and the psychology of colour, which can be felt in every picture.

Who or what influences you?

I am mainly influenced by my own mood and the colour. I often work from my inner feelings and the choice of colour plays a big role in this. I have no role models - there are many artists whose work I appreciate, but I try to avoid their influence on my own work. I want to remain free in my creative process and not be overly influenced by others.

Make us curious. What are you planning to do next?

I have founded an artist collective called Flux and we are currently working on new ideas for 2025 as well as exciting collaborative projects. In addition to these collaborative projects, I also have my own collaborations in the pipeline that I'm very excited about. There will of course be new works and I can't wait to show them soon. So it remains exciting!
